Stuart James Burne

I am a painter from Holyhead, on the Isle of Anglesey, and for the past two decades I have been making a sustained series of paintings inspired by the local landscape, in particular the Irish Sea and the coastal port of Holyhead. My work often explores the relationship between monoprinting and painting, combining the fluid, unpredictable qualities of monoprinting with the more deliberate processes of painting. I enjoy working onto paper, as the surface of the paint changes and reveals new textures, and I am particularly drawn to the immediacy of mark making. Whether working on location or in the studio, I am attentive to the movement and colour changes of the Irish Sea, seeking to absorb and translate these shifting impressions into my work. My recent research has explored the psychogeographic influence of the Welsh seascape and landscape, a theme that has become increasingly evident in my paintings. I began my formal art education with a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Coleg Menai (2003–04), before completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Glyndŵr University (Coleg Menai) between 2004 and 2009.
